Put each monthly amount in its own place
A health plan’s monthly premium can be payable in addition to Part B. Medicare also explains that some plans help pay part of the Part B premium. A plan’s reported price does not describe all deductibles, copays or annual spending.
- Total reported plan premium
- The consolidated Part C + D plan-premium field. It is not every Medicare-related charge.
- Part C and Part D components
- The medical and drug premium portions reported separately. When a total and its components are provided, the components are not extra bills to add to that total.
- Part B reduction, sometimes called giveback
- A reported feature that may reduce the Part B amount withheld or billed. It is not a blanket discount on service costs or an automatic cash payment to every member.
Read the zero-premium and reduction example
The retained 2027 record for H5216-435-002 reports a $0 consolidated plan premium, $0 Part C component, $0 Part D component and a $97 monthly Part B reduction feature.
That does not establish that prescriptions or medical care cost nothing. Ask the plan and Medicare how the reported reduction applies to the member’s Part B premium, payment method and timing. This guide does not assume a standard Part B premium or calculate a member’s net payment.

Reconcile a nonzero plan premium without double-counting
For a second, separate example, 2027 H0609-059-000 reports a $79 consolidated monthly plan premium, a $0 Part C component and a $79 Part D component.
| Reading of this record | Result |
|---|---|
| Components: $0 + $79 | $79, matching the reported total plan premium |
| Incorrectly add total plus components: $79 + $0 + $79 | $158, which double-counts the drug premium |
The $79 is the reported plan premium, not an annual cost estimate or a substitute for Part B and other applicable charges. A missing component in another record should remain missing; do not force this arithmetic onto incomplete or group-specific data.

Use a three-question payment checklist
- Which field is the total plan premium, and which fields are its components?
- Is a Part B reduction reported for this exact year and segment, and how does the plan say it is administered?
- What remains outside these fields: Part B, possible income-related adjustments or penalties, service costs, and any assistance or other coverage affecting the member?
Confirm the year, service area, eligibility and any employer-group terms. The comparison tool keeps reported components separate; select the same year on both records. A plan-code match does not establish the person’s final payment.
